Frequently asked questions
Is it free?
Yes. No charge, no account, no email address. Everything on this site is available immediately and in full.
Do you store my answers?
No. The quiz is built as a small JavaScript file that runs inside your own browser. Your ticks never leave your device and are not sent to us. Closing the tab discards them.
How exactly is the score calculated?
You start at 100. Every box you tick removes one point. Tick 28 boxes and you finish on 72. That is the whole formula.
Is a low score bad?
No. The score counts experiences, nothing more. Most of the gap between two people comes down to age and circumstance rather than character, and the list itself is a hundred arbitrary items rather than a considered measure of anything.
What is the average score?
Nobody knows, and any exact figure you see quoted is guesswork. The people who take internet quizzes are not a representative sample, question lists differ between sites, and no answers are verified.
Why are your questions different from other sites?
We wrote our own. Reproducing another site's wording creates copyright problems, and many circulating versions include explicit material we would not put in front of a general audience. Our list produces the same 0 to 100 range using experiences suitable for all readers.
How old do I need to be?
This site is intended for readers aged 13 and over, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. Our questions are written to be suitable for a general audience.
Can I retake it?
As often as you like. Use "Start over" to clear every box. Many people retake it once a year to see what has changed.
Are you connected to Rice University?
No. This is an independent site with no affiliation to, endorsement from, or connection with Rice University or any other institution. The name describes a widely known quiz format.
Something is broken. What can I try?
Refresh the page, disable any script-blocking extension for this site, and try again in a current browser. Your quiz answers are stored only in the page while it is open, so a refresh starts the test over.
